Poland is the sixth-largest fitness market in Europe and the largest in Central & Eastern Europe. After a difficult pandemic period, the industry has not only recovered but is growing faster than pre-COVID levels. Total sector revenue reaches approximately PLN 8.5 billion (Deloitte / Polish Chamber of Fitness, 2025), with growth sustaining at 6-8% annually. Yet behind these impressive numbers lies a paradox: digital transformation in Polish fitness studios is still in its infancy.

The Market in Numbers: 3,400 Clubs and 3.8 Million Memberships

According to EuropeActive and IHRSA data from 2025, Poland has over 3,400 fitness clubs with more than 3.8 million active memberships. Market penetration stands at approximately 10.1% of the population — meaning every tenth Pole holds an active gym membership.

The most dynamic growth comes from boutique specialty studios — yoga, Pilates, CrossFit, martial arts — growing at 12-15% year over year (Polish Chamber of Fitness). Budget chains (CityFit, Just Gym) hold ~25% of clubs, while the mid-market segment (Calypso, Zdrofit) accounts for another 30%.

The Digital Gap: Expectations vs. Reality

Only 15% of independent studios have their own app or use a white-label solution. 65% of personal trainers manage bookings via WhatsApp or SMS. 40% of small studios still use Excel or Google Sheets for scheduling, and less than 5% use an integrated management platform. This fragmentation costs the average studio owner 5-10 hours per week in administrative overhead.

BLIK and Karnets: Poland's Unique Fitness Payment DNA

Poland has a unique payment landscape. BLIK accounts for ~62% of mobile payments — a purely Polish solution integrated with banking apps. The Polish karnet (membership pass) system — monthly unlimited passes, class-pack entries, and employer-subsidized MultiSport/FitProfit cards used by ~1.5 million Poles — creates structural barriers for foreign platforms that assume Western subscription models.

What's Next? A Billion-Dollar Opportunity

The independent studio and boutique segment (~35% of all clubs) is underdigitized and lacks resources to build proprietary apps. A fitness platform that speaks Polish, supports BLIK, understands karnets, and integrates with KSeF (Poland's mandatory e-invoicing system) does not yet exist. 2025 may be the breakthrough year for Polish fitness digitization.
